Two overdue snowmobilers from Hibbing found safe after cold night
Two overdue snowmobilers from Hibbing were located safe Sunday morning after they got lost and spent the night in an unheated boathouse in Voyageurs National Park.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said the two men were reported missing early Sunday after they left the Ash River Trail area bound for Crane Lake on Saturday afternoon and did not return home by late evening.
As officials were checking with local resorts and hotels on Sunday, the missing snowmobilers made their way back to the Ash River Trail at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, the sheriff's office reported. The men said they became disoriented in blowing and drifting snow and took refuge in an unheated boathouse in the park. Temperatures fell to near 20 below zero in that area early Sunday.
One of the men suffered a minor back injury while trying to free his snowmobile from the ice, the sheriff's office said. Neither man required hospitalization.
The sheriff's office and St. Louis County Rescue Squad were assisted by the aviation wing of the Minnesota State Patrol.
