Litchfield house explodes Friday morning; couple survives

LITCHFIELD -- A Litchfield couple escaped serious injury early Friday morning when there was an apparent explosion at their rural home near Lake Ripley southwest of town.

Larry McMains, 60, and his wife, Barbara Ann McMains, 56, awoke in their home when they heard the explosion, but were able to get out of their home safely, according to Meeker County Chief Deputy Jeff Norlin. The McMains home is at 60219 245th St., Litchfield.

The McMains got into their vehicle and were driving when they met a Meeker County Sheriff's deputy, who placed the emergency call at 4:02 a.m., according to Norlin.

The deputy reported the doors and windows were blown out of the home, according to Norlin, and the home was a total loss. Norlin said it appeared to be an LP gas problem.

Emergency vehicles had cleared the scene by about 8:30 a.m., said Norlin. Sheriff department investigators, the fire marshal and officials from Ferrell Gas Company were expected to be on the scene looking into the explosion throughout the day.
