Fire destroys large turkey barn in Walcott
WALCOTT—A morning fire at a turkey barn has created a race against time for crews near Walcott.
A barn on the Lelm farm east of Walcott caught fire Tuesday morning, and is a total loss.
The fire took several hours to extinguish, and its cause is unknown.
The Richland county emergency manager says there were no turkeys in it, but the fire did knock out power and create a massive water leak.
He says the two other barns on the property contain thousands of turkeys, and if crews can't restore power and water soon, those birds will die.
