DULUTH, Minn. - At least 20 cars were involved in a crash in one of the Interstate 35 tunnels in downtown Duluth late Thursday morning.

Emergency crews were methodically going through vehicles in the southbound lanes and treating people for injuries after 11 a.m. Several people were put on stretchers and into ambulances. The tunnel is below the Pickwick Restaurant on East Superior Street.

Tow trucks were slowly removing vehicles but the interstate remained closed through the lunch hour. Several semi-trailers were stuck behind the accident scene, unable to turn around.

The accident occurred as the morning snow that snarled commuter traffic abated.
