Weekend snow: It isn't over yet

WILLMAR — Some impressive snowfall amounts are being reported in west central Minnesota following Saturday's day-long blizzard.

The National Weather Service doesn't have snowfall amounts reported yet from Willmar but Granite Falls is currently reporting 17 inches, Montevideo has 14 ½ inches and Canby has 19 inches.

And it isn't over yet.

The blizzard warning that was in place yesterday has been lifted, but much of central and southern Minnesota will remain under a winter weather advisory into this 7 p.m. this evening.

The snow combined with gusty winds and slippery roads has caused numerous churches in the area to cancel worship services today.

Tim McCoy, maintenance supervisory for the Minnesota Department of Transportation office in Willmar, said crews are out today trying to get roads cleaned up.

"The snow wouldn't be so bad if we didn't have the wind," McCoy said.

National Weather Service said the slow moving weather system will continue to deliver light snow and gusty north winds, bringing another 1-3 inches of snow today.

North winds blowing 15-20 mph, with gusts of 25-30 mph, will continue to make visibility difficult and will make it difficult for road crews to apply chemicals.

The wind and the warming road temperatures will create "blow ice" that will make roads very slippery in some areas today, McCoy said.

When wind whips across warm roads the "snow sticks and the wind polishes it" to create a half-inch of ice that snow plows can't remove, he said,

While stretches of roads will be clear because the wind is blowing the snow away, McCoy warns that drivers could be "fooled" when patches of blow ice pop up on roads in sheltered areas.

McCoy said the tentative plan is to keep crews out on the roads until sundown and then get them back on the routes by 3 a.m. to get roads cleaned up for the Monday morning commute.
