GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns and the San Francisco 49ers reached the halfway point of their season undefeated, beating the Arizona Cardinals 28-25 on Thursday night, Oct. 31. San Francisco (8-0) fell behind 7-0, but responded with three touchdowns -- one as time expired in the second quarter after Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury called a timeout and gave the 49ers a second chance on fourth down -- to take a 21-7 halftime lead.
HOUSTON -- Almost out of contention in May, champs in October. Howie Kendrick, Anthony Rendon and the Washington Nationals completed their amazing comeback journey -- fittingly with one final, late rally on the road. In Game 7 of the World Series, no less. Kendrick and Rendon homered in the seventh inning as the Nationals overcame a two-run deficit, rocking the Houston Astros 6-2 Wednesday night, Oct. 30, to claim the first title in franchise history.
PHILADELPHIA -- Joel Embiid and Karl-Anthony Towns got into a brawl that overshadowed a rout on the court. Embiid scored 19 points before he was ejected for fighting with Towns, and the Philadelphia 76ers cruised to a 117-95 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night, Oct. 30, for their fourth straight win to begin the season.
How much are a college athlete's name, image and likeness worth? And who would want to pay for them? The questions are front and center now that the NCAA, pressured by individual states that have started acting on their own, has taken a major step toward allowing athletes to make money off their fame. Deciding to reverse the prohibition on earning money was the easy part; determining how much athletes can make, under what circumstances and in a way that doesn't permit abuses are bigger challenges that won't be as simple to resolve.
HOUSTON — There was no logical explanation to be shared, so Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez didn't allot too much time attempting to decipher something both historic and unfathomable. With the Nationals' 7-2 victory over the Houston Astros in Game 6 of the World Series on Tuesday, the visiting teams improved to 6-0, a first in postseason history. Washington will attempt to complete the road sweep Wednesday night in Game 7 of the Fall Classic, a result that would give the franchise its first championship.
HOUSTON -- Stephen Strasburg took a gem into the ninth inning and Juan Soto ran all the way to first base with his bat following a go-ahead home run, the same way Houston slugger Alex Bregman did earlier. Washington has matched the Astros pitch for pitch, hit for hit, win for win -- even home run celebration for home run celebration. Now, it's onto a winner-take-all Game 7 to decide the first World Series in which the visiting team won the first six.
The NCAA Board of Governors has voted unanimously to allow amateur athletes to cash in on their name, image and likeness "in a manner consistent with the collegiate model." The board's principles and guidelines include:
ATLANTA —The United States' largest governing body for college athletics took the first step Tuesday, Oct. 28, toward allowing amateur athletes to cash in on their fame, voting unanimously to permit them to "benefit from the use of their name, image and likeness."
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers stopped beating themselves long enough to keep the Miami Dolphins winless. James Conner ran for 145 yards and a touchdown, and Mason Rudolph overcame a shaky start to throw for 251 yards and two scores as the Steelers pulled away for a 27-14 victory on Monday night, Oct. 28.
HOUSTON -- The two women who flashed themselves from behind the backstop during Game 5 of the World Series have been banned from major league ballparks. Major League Baseball sent the women a letter shortly after their escapade Sunday night. Julia Rose and Lauren Summer identified themselves on social media. Popular on Instagram, they lifted their tops and exposed themselves as Houston Astros ace Gerrit Cole was set to pitch to Ryan Zimmerman of Washington in the seventh inning at Nationals Park.
