DENVER -- Nikola Jokic had 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, Jamal Murray scored 28 points, and the host Denver Nuggets beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 109-100 on Friday night, Dec. 20. Will Barton added 13 and Paul Millsap and Gary Harris scored 11 each for Denver, which won all five games on its current homestand. Minnesota played its second straight game without center Karl-Anthony Towns and lost its ninth in a row. Towns, who leads the Timberwolves in scoring (26.5) and rebounds (11.7) per game, is nursing a sprained left knee.
GLENDALE, Ariz. — Mats Zuccarello, Marcus Foligno and Eric Staal each had a goal and two assists, and Brad Hunt and Ryan Hartman tallied a goal and assist each to lead the Minnesota Wild to an 8-5 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday night, Dec. 19. Minnesota ended a three-game road losing streak, scoring four goals in the second period and four more in the third. The Wild lost a 4-2 lead early in the third period but outscored Arizona 4-3 in the third to get a win over the Pacific Division leaders.
The nominees for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame's 2020 class could build a team that's almost impossible to beat, starting with Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett. Garnett, who spent his first 12 seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, finally became an NBA champion with the Boston Celtics in 2008. He played 21 years in the NBA, including 1 1/2 seasons with the Brooklyn Nets before returning to the Wolves in a limited role.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Brandon Ingram scored 34 points and the visiting New Orleans Pelicans ended their franchise-worst 13-game losing streak with a 107-99 victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night, Dec. 18. Jrue Holiday added 18 points, JJ Redick had 12, Josh Hart added 11 and Lonzo Ball 10 as the Pelicans won their first game since Nov. 21 in the opening game of a four-game road trip.
LAS VEGAS — Tomas Nosek scored what scored what proved to be the game-winning goal early in the third period and Marc-Andre Fleury had 24 saves to lead the Vegas Golden Knights to a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night, Dec. 17, in Las Vegas. Shea Theodore and Chandler Stephenson also scored goals and Mark Stone added two assists for Vegas, which extended its home win streak to three games, its longest of the season, while also winning for the eighth time in its last 11 games.
NEW ORLEANS -- Drew Brees set NFL records for touchdown passes in a career and completion percentage in a game as the host New Orleans Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts 34-7 on Monday night, Dec. 16. Brees, who entered the game one touchdown pass behind New England's Tom Brady and two behind former Colts and Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, threw four scoring passes. He broke Manning's record of 539 on a 5-yard pass to tight end Josh Hill on the first possession of the third quarter.
Another week, another new No. 1 in college basketball. Kansas moved into the top spot in the AP Top 25 poll, released Monday. Louisville held the top spot a week ago, but a 70-57 loss to unranked Texas Tech cost the Cardinals. Instead, Kansas (9-1) moved up one place on the strength of lopsided victories over Milwaukee and Missouri-Kansas City, followed by Gonzaga (11-1), which rose four places to No. 2. The top 10 was reshuffled, with only Virginia (8-1) holding the same spot from last week at No. 9.
PITTSBURGH -- The visiting Buffalo Bills clinched a playoff spot Sunday night, Dec. 15, when Josh Allen's 14-yard tiebreaking touchdown pass to Tyler Kroft was the difference in a 17-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. With the scored tied at 10, Allen found Kroft at the right pylon to cap a six-play, 70-yard drive with 7:55 left in the fourth quarter. Buffalo (10-4) has won four of its past five games, and Pittsburgh (8-6) had won seven of eight. Allen was 13 of 25 passing for 139 yards with an interception, and he also ran for a touchdown.
CHICAGO -- Patrick Kane scored three goals for his eighth career hat trick as the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the visiting Minnesota Wild 5-3 Sunday night, Dec. 15. Brandon Saad and David Kampf also scored for the Blackhawks, who won for the first time in five games (1-3-1). Goaltender Robin Lehner made 23 saves. Kevin Fiala scored two goals for Minnesota and Eric Staal added another for his 1,000th career NHL point. Rookie Kaapo Kahkonen stopped 22 of 26 shots but suffered his first loss in regulation in five games (3-1-1).
MELBOURNE, Australia -- Captain Tiger Woods and his two most beleaguered players set the tone for a historic comeback to win the 13th Presidents Cup on Sunday, Dec. 15. With his team trailing 10-8 entering Sunday's singles play at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club, Woods needed his United States team to win at least eight of the 12 matches to win the Cup for the eight consecutive time.
