LAKOTA, N.D. — A Lisbon, N.D., man who was behind the wheel in a crash that left his passenger dead three years ago appeared for his third jury trial this week. Jordan Lee Borland is accused of killing 23-year-old Kevin Lemna on April 13, 2017, when he missed a turn on Highway 1 outside Pekin, N.D., and sent his 2012 Dodge Ram rolling sometime between 4 and 6:30 a.m. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found both men in the vehicle's passenger seat, Lemna already dead, with an open case of beer in the back seat and beer cans strewn among the wreckage.
EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. — An East Grand Forks mother is without her children after social services removed them from her custody last week. That isn't an uncommon occurrence, said East Grand Forks Police Deputy Lt. Rodney Hajicek. What is uncommon about this particular case is the outpouring of support for the mother, Nimo Khalif, from the local Somali community, he said. More than 100 supporters attended Khalif's first court appearance in Crookston on Monday, Jan.
BISMARCK — A Grand Forks man has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison followed by 10 years of supervised release for receipt and possession of child pornography. Nicholas Adam Bartholome, 28, pleaded guilty to the crimes in federal court Thursday, Jan. 23, before U.S. District Court Chief Judge Peter Welte.

GRAFTON, N.D. — A trial for an Adams man accused of shooting his 36-year-old daughter during an argument in May will begin with jury selection on Tuesday, Jan. 14, and is expected to last four days. Steven Donald Aune, 66, could face up to life in prison, if convicted. Due to the amount of media coverage the case has received, 84 potential jurors will be called as opposed to the usual 30.
BADGER, Minn. -- A Badger, Minn., man made his first appearance in court Friday, Jan. 3, for the murder of Angela Wynne. Angelo Oluf Borreson, 56, faces charges of second-degree murder with intent, second-degree murder without intent, and assault in the second degree. Borreson's bail was set at $750,000 to $1.5 million, depending on conditions, and he was granted a conditional release on Friday. An omnibus hearing is scheduled for March 16.
HALMA, Minn. — Twenty-three years after Becky Jo Look went missing from her Halma home, cadaver dogs searched several rural farms for her remains. At the time, investigators said they believed they could turn up a body at any time. That was August 2018. Look's whereabouts have yet to be determined.
A Thief River Falls woman was sentenced to almost nine years in prison for third-degree murder. Nicole Lee Baker, 32, had credit for almost two years served. She also was ordered to pay $210 in court fees. Baker will serve her sentence in the women's state prison in Shakopee, Minn. Baker is one of three Thief River Falls residents to face murder and drug charges for a fentanyl overdose death. In September, she became the last of four people involved in the fatal overdose to change her plea.
GRAND FORKS — As meteorologists continue to monitor a weekend winter storm, confidence is increasing that the Red River Valley will see significant impacts, said National Weather Service meteorologist Tom Grafenauer. "There are such things like precise timing and degree of the impact and snowfall amounts, exact wind speeds and how that relates to blowing snow, that remain uncertain," Grafenauer said. "But the chances for six inches or more snow are fairly high." A winter storm warning has been issued for much of eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota for 6 a.m. Saturday, Dec.
GRAND FORKS — Grand Forks fire crews helped coax a dog out of a discharge drain to reunite her with her family Sunday morning, Dec. 22. Crews responded to a report of a missing dog around 10 a.m. Sunday on the 2600 block of 40th Avenue South. When responders arrived on scene, owner Scott Badger told them Kenai, a 2-year-old Springer Spaniel, had gone into a storm drain discharge grate and was unable to get out.
