U.S. men's Olympic curling champion Tyler George will be stepping away from John Shuster's team this upcoming season and be replaced by another Duluthian in Chris Plys, according to USA Curling. Plys, a 2010 Olympian, will join Matt Hamilton of McFarland, Wis., John Landsteiner of Duluth and Joe Polo of Duluth on Shuster's team, which shocked the curling world by winning gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Gangneung, South Korea.

Finnish goalie Niclas Westerholm, who played for Virginia/Mountain Iron-Buhl during the 2015-16 season, signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Nashville Predators on Tuesday. The deal starts next year for the 20-year-old, who is in his first professional season (Finnish Elite League). The 6-foot-4 Westerholm compiled a 3.31 goals-against average and .914 save percentage for the Blue Devils in 2015-16, when he appeared in 25 games. He is a native of Helsinki, Finland.

Minnesota Duluth scored six runs in the second inning against William Jewell College but brought home only three more runs the rest of the day Sunday in dropping two games in Emporia, Kan.
Minnesota Duluth hit three home runs in a five-run third inning to rout Pittsburg State 9-3 on Sunday, the final day of the St. Patrick's Classic in Emporia, Kan. Senior Becky Smith, freshman Jessica Bren and freshman Jordyn Thomas all went deep in the inning as the Bulldogs improved to 18-5.
Esko received the No. 4 seed during Saturday's seedings vote and will play No. 5 St. Cloud Cathedral in a Class AA quarterfinal of the high school boys basketball state tournament. The Eskomos (26-4) and Crusaders (25-5) meet at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Target Center in Minneapolis. Minnesota Duluth men's basketball coach Matt Bowen's contract was not renewed Monday according to the university news release, bringing to an end an unproductive six-year tenure for the former Bemidji State coach. Bowen was 131-211 in his six years on the Bulldogs' bench, including 12-18 in the 2017-18 season which ended with a quarterfinal loss Saturday in the NSIC tournament.

At least Storie has kept his sense of humor about it. The normally stingy Hilltoppers, who closed the regular season by getting thumped 6-2 by the Prowlers, are now looking forward to putting that game behind them as the No. 1 seed in the Section 7A playoffs.
