DULUTH, Minn. — As a Duluth police officer, Gary Waller investigated the 1977 murders of a wealthy heiress and her night nurse at Glensheen Mansion — a case that remains one of Minnesota's most infamous and intriguing crimes. As St. Louis County sheriff, he was credited with ushering in a modern age of law enforcement training and technology, improving investigations and overseeing the construction of a new jail. Waller, a familiar face in the local law enforcement community for more than 40 years, died Tuesday at his Moose Lake home. He was 72.

The judge said he spent another day thinking about Donna Ruth Estrem, the 62-year-old good Samaritan killed in an instant when she stopped to check on Katzmark after leaving a shift at her job as a caregiver for seniors.

SOLWAY TOWNSHIP, Minn. — A Solway Township man had nearly twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system when he fell asleep at the wheel early Memorial Day morning, killing one passenger and injuring three others in a rollover crash, according to a criminal complaint. Austin Darrell Hilden, 19, was charged Wednesday, July 12, by summons with felony criminal vehicular homicide in the May 29 death of 19-year-old Axton Dylan Whitfield. He also faces three counts of criminal vehicular operation.
SUPERIOR, Wis. -- A bar fight allegedly led to a double shooting that left one man dead and his brother seriously injured on New Year’s Day in Superior. The Superior Police Department on Monday identified the homicide victim as 21-year-old Kyle Androsky. Authorities said he was fatally shot behind the Third Base Bar Sunday morning. His brother, David Androsky, 27, was shot in the chest and taken to Essentia Health St.
