MANCHESTER, N.H. — The two top finishers in last week's Iowa caucuses, 40 years apart in age and representing opposite ends of the Democratic Party's ideological spectrum, are heading for a showdown in Tuesday's primary — each taking increasingly aggressive swipes at the other. But there is an unusual twist to the new rivalry between Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg.
WASHINGTON - Attorney General William Barr acknowledged Monday that the Justice Department would evaluate material that Rudy Giuliani, President Donald Trump's personal attorney, had gathered from Ukrainian sources claiming to have damaging information about former vice president Joe Biden and his family - though Barr and other officials suggested Giuliani was being treated no differently than any tipster.
BERLIN, N.H. — If you are looking for evidence of President Donald Trump's "great American comeback," this working-class city in the heart of New Hampshire's rugged and remote North Country seems to have much to offer. The unemployment rate, which was touching double digits 10 years ago as Berlin weathered the collapse of its signature mill, is down to 3%. The local paper is stuffed with help-wanted ads. Property values are climbing as newcomers move in.
WASHINGTON — The Justice Department has charged four members of the Chinese military with the 2017 hack at the credit reporting agency Equifax, a massive data breach that compromised the personal information of nearly half of all Americans. In a nine-count indictment filed in federal court in Atlanta, federal prosecutors alleged that four members of the People's Liberation Army hacked into Equifax's systems, stealing the personal data as well as company trade secrets.
DARTMOUTH, N.H. — Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., sprinted through New Hampshire this weekend, trying to use a widely praised debate performance — and an ensuing infusion of donations — to exceed expectations in the upcoming primary and beef up her skeletal organization in the races to come.
NEW YORK - Jessica Mann thanked Harvey Weinstein often throughout their five-year relationship. The aspiring actress, who met Weinstein in her late 20s, expressed gratitude to him for her many invitations to hot-ticket Hollywood parties. For solving her personal problems, like a jam she was in for getting too many parking tickets. For getting her a job working for a celebrity hairstylist. And for making her feel pretty. "I appreciate all you do for me," Mann wrote to Weinstein, in an April 12, 2013, email. "It shows."
The Iowa Democratic Party announced Sunday that Pete Buttigieg would probably receive 14 delegates to the national presidential nominating convention from last week's chaotic caucuses, while Sen. Bernie Sanders would receive 12. The announcement came from state party officials nearly a week after the Iowa caucuses ended in controversy amid vote-counting problems and questions about the technology used to report results from 1,765 precincts.
BEIJING - China pushed ahead Sunday with emergency measures to isolate coronavirus patients in specialized facilities at the disease-ravaged epicenter, Wuhan, as the number of patient deaths surged past the 774 killed by the SARS outbreak that straddled 2002 and 2003.
There are so many unknowns about the novel coronavirus that has triggered unprecedented quarantine efforts, dangerous conspiracy theories and global alarm. Much of what we know about coronaviruses comes from the ones that we've dealt with before - ranging from deadly global health threats such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) to versions that cause the common cold. New information is coming in on a daily basis, but here's what we know so far about the respiratory virus that has, as of Feb. 7, infected more than 31,000 people and killed at least 630 people.
BEIJING — The first American and Japanese citizens have died from the coronavirus that continues to spread unabated in central China, as authorities here labeled masks a "strategic resource" and manufacturing companies pivoted to mask production to try to boost supply of protective equipment.
